Our School Day
St Gabriel’s CofE breakfast club is free for all pupils from Nursery to Year 6:
- 08:00am–8:45am
Our school hours are:
- Morning Nursery: 08:45am-11:45am
- 30 Hour Nursery Offer: 08:45am-3:15pm
- Reception and Key Stage 1: 8:45am-3:15pm
- Key Stage 2: 8:45am–3:20pm
(32.5 hours per week)
Wraparound care is available daily for all pupils from 3:15pm-5:30pm at a cost of £8.50 per session
Lessons:
Every day, classes start with a ‘strong start’ from 8:45am – 9:00am. ‘Strong start’ focuses on arithmetic and a review of basic skills previously taught in maths lessons.
Following this, in Reception and KS1, phonics and guided reading are taught through the Read Write Inc. (RWI) programme. At the same time of day, all key stage two classes take part in daily reading comprehension lessons in which a range of reading skills are developed through the reading of novels, linked texts and reading for pleasure opportunities. Children who still need decoding support in Years 3 and 4 are streamed into RWI groups. Pupils in Y5 and Y6, who need further decoding support are provided with an intervention called ‘Fresh Start’. This is a branch of the RWI programme.daily reading comprehension lessons are taught in key stage two classes.
Maths lessons are taught every morning across the school. Maths lessons focus on the five principles of the mastery approach:
– Coherence
– Representation and structure
– Mathematical thinking
– Fluency
– Variation
English is taught every day as well as further additional spelling sessions every day using the Read Write Inc. (RWI) spelling programme. In addition to this, the school has adopted the Nelson Handwriting approach which is practiced weekly for extended sessions in Reception, KS1 and KS2.
Pupils carry out one afternoon of PE each week.

British values and spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) education are woven in through the teaching and learning of core and non-core subjects, enrichment activities and the wider curriculum.
